How to Overcome Self-Doubt at Work and Say Yes to New Opportunities

Have you ever had someone see something in you… before you were ready to see it in yourself?

Throughout my career, there have been moments when people reflected strengths back to me, qualities I had quietly recognized, but hadn’t fully owned.

Looking back, those moments were seeds.
Small, seemingly simple observations that ultimately shaped where I am today and where I’m still growing.

Just yesterday, I was speaking with a client at a large organization. She shared that a colleague told her:

“You’d be really great at leading a large employee resource group.”

Her reaction?
A mix of excitement… and immediate self-doubt.

She felt honored that someone believed in her but just as quickly, the inner critic took over:

  • “Am I really ready?”

  • “What if I fail?”

  • “Why me?”

This is what I see all the time.

Opportunities rarely arrive wrapped in certainty.
They often show up alongside fear, discomfort, and doubt.

And too often, that inner voice convinces us to stay where it feels safe.

But here’s the truth:
Growth doesn’t come from staying in your comfort zone. It comes from stepping just beyond it.

The key isn’t eliminating fear.
It’s learning to turn up the volume on a different voice:
“Yes, you can.”

So here’s something to reflect on:

Think about a time when someone recognized a strength or potential in you.
Did you lean into it… or did you brush it aside?

The next time someone says:
“You’d be great at this.”
“I’d love for you to lead this.”

Pause.

Instead of defaulting to “no,” give yourself the space to consider “what if.”

Because those moments?
They’re not random.

They’re seeds.
And what you choose to do with them can shape everything that comes next.
