Is that just a glass of wine or are you trying to escape?

Having a glass of wine at the end of the day is fairly typical, right? Drinking after a long day is a favorite pastime. But when you find that you “need” to have a drink in order to unwind at the end of your day, it is something to pay attention to.

Drinking, excessive snacking, smoking, bingeing on Netflix, social media scrolling for hours, excessive shopping, etc. are all ways that we have learned to cope with the stress of our lives.

Are you trying to escape from your feelings and the reality of your life?

Try to pinpoint what you are escaping from. Is it your job, a relationship, your fears, money, etc? In the moment it is much easier to avoid a situation by escaping and numbing yourself from your reality, but over time, these unhealthy ways of coping will only make things worse. Avoiding and bottling up our feelings and our stress contribute greatly to feeling depressed and anxious. So does staying in a job or a relationship that isn't serving you anymore.

Here are a few suggestions and steps that you can take:

  • Identify the areas of your life that are in need of a "tune up".

  • Ask yourself what is needed in these areas and what you can do today.

  • Talk it out with a friend or family member.

  • Journal about your thoughts about your life.

  • Get professional help and guidance to navigate the challenges.

  • Create the life you want and tap into healthier ways to cope.

We don't have to feel happy all of the time as we will always experience ups and downs. It is just part of our human experience. However, we won't need to escape our lives when we can create a life and career that align with who we are and what we want.
